Skype isn’t square

Microsoft today released an updated version of Skype for Mac called Skype 7, and an updated preview for Windows called Skype 6.2. The new versions apparently “…make it easier to chat and share’.
I’m not sure about that, but it does more closely resemble the mobile versions. It also takes design ideas from Facebook’s messenger app by going with rounded icons like the ‘chat heads’ design from Facebook.

While it is nicer looking, I still feel that they need to release a ‘chat first’ version of Skype for mobile devices that ‘also’ allows video calling. Rather than their Video calling approach that ‘also’ has chat (if you get what I mean).
Chat or IM apps seem to be the ‘in thing’ these days. Facebook just completed their $18 Billion (yes I said Billion) dollar purchase of the ‘whatsapp’ messenger company, Facebook recently released a separate messenger app and Google is rumored to be doing the same.
It’s a pity Skype couldn’t take advantage of their market lead sooner, but here’s hoping that the new leadership at Microsoft can fix that before it’s too late.

You can read all about it on Skype’s blog
